Welcome to This Chick Loves Paper Blog!
Today, I'm excited to share a special 12x12 scrapbook layout featuring "The Little Mermaid." This page captures a fun and memorable moment from our visit to Disney's California Adventure, specifically in front of the Ariel's Undersea Adventure ride.
A Fun Story Behind the Photo
During our visit, my son was adamant about not riding Ariel's Undersea Adventure. I, on the other hand, was determined to experience it. So, we compromised by taking a photo in front of the ride, with the promise that we would ride it next time. Fast forward to our next trip, we rode the ride and have made it a tradition to go on it every time we visit! It's now a cherished memory that we look back on with smiles and laughter.
Design Process
When designing this layout, I started with a clear visual in my head. To bring it to life, I used Design Space. This tool not only helped me visualize the final layout but also provided precise measurements for cutting the papers.
Materials Used
Background and Papers
For the background, I chose a piece of patterned paper from Stampin’ Up!'s "Unbounded Beauty" Designer Series Paper. The colors and details were perfect for the underwater theme.
Glimmer Paper
I wanted a shimmery and sparkling look for this Disney-themed page. So, I used the 2024-2026 In Color Glimmer 12"x12" Specialty Paper and the "Three Colors Glimmer" 12x12 Specialty Paper. These papers added the perfect amount of sparkle.
Stamps & Dies
To create the embellishments, I used a combination of two stamp and die sets. The first is called "Round We Go". This fun and airy set die-cuts pinwheels in different sizes! They add tons of depth and dimension to your crafts.
The second is called Beauty of the Deep" stamp and die sets. With this stamp and die set, you can really see all the wonders of the ocean and create your own scene however you want.
Each of these sets brought something unique to the layout, and I love how they complement each other.
Cardstocks
I also used "Shy Shamrock" 2024-2026 In Color Inks to stamp some seaweed on white and "Shy Shamrock" cardstock. This helped balance the glitter and add some variety to the page.
For the photo, I double-matted it using a 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 piece of Petunia Pop cardstock, a 4 1/4 x 4 1/4 piece of white daisy cardstock, and a 4 x 4 photo.
SVGs and Finishing Touches
Since this is a Little Mermaid page, I included SVGs I found on Etsy of our favorite characters from the movie. I used my Cricut to print and cut these characters.
They printed a little light considering that my page was so vibrant. But that was ok with me! The lighter print allowed me to color over them with Stampin’ Up’s 2024-2026 In Color markers, giving them a personalized touch. To Purchase the SVG FIles, click here.
I cut the waves, title, and date using the Cricut.
Tips & Tricks for “Round We Go” Dies:
The larger round die is made up of three pieces, while the others are just two.
I glued the edges together and held them in place with paper clips, being careful not to use too much glue.
After gluing the top round piece of glitter paper to the top of the pinwheel, place a clear stamp pad or ink pad over the top to hold the circle piece in place while the glue dries.
Add a stiffener to the back of the pinwheels to keep them from flattening in a scrapbook or when mailing a card. Three great options are:
Mod Podge Plaid Stiffy Commercial Fabric Stiffener: This is a versatile and flexible stiffener ideal for various craft projects .
Faultless Premium Luxe Finish: Known for adding a crisp finish to fabrics, it can also work well in keeping your pinwheels sturdy and in shape .
Aleene’s Stiffen-Quick Fabric Stiffening Spray: A quick-drying, clear, and non-toxic stiffener that is easy to use and ideal for temporary stiffening needs .
Adhering To The Page
When gluing pinwheels to the page, place a clear stamp or stamp pads on top to help press pinwheels down and hold them in place while the glue dries.
Using Foam Strips or Dots: Use foam strips or dots that match the height of the pinwheel in hollow areas to add additional support.
By following these tips, you can enhance the durability and appearance of your pinwheel creations.
A Heartwarming Reaction
As I was finishing up the page, my son walked in and exclaimed, “WOW! THAT'S AWESOME!!” This made me smile from ear to ear, especially since it was a photo he initially didn't want to take. Now, it’s a page we both love and a memory we’ll always cherish.
Conclusion
Creating this layout was fast and fun, thanks to the glitter papers and the "Round We Go" dies, which did most of the work. I’m thrilled with how it turned out and can't wait to create more Disney-themed pages. Stay tuned for more scrapbook layouts from our annual Disney trips!
