When your very first trip to Disneyland includes your very first Haunted Mansion Holiday ride, you don’t just scrapbook it—you conjure up a double-page layout dripping in drama, storytelling, and spooky magic. 🖤✨
This 12x12 scrapbook spread is handmade to the bones—from the haunted patchwork vibes to the bold faux pinstripe background. And trust me, it’s packed with more secrets than Oogie Boogie’s dice cup. (👀 Can you spot the three Hidden Mickeys?)
Inspired by a Jayma Malme sketch challenge and reimagined with full-blown technique teaching, this layout is more than a memory—it’s a haunted masterpiece. 💀💥

❗A Quick Boo About Measurements
Out of respect for the fabulous Jayma Malme and her original sketch design, I’m not sharing measurements on this one. 💖 But if you’re new here—never fear! Most of my other layouts come with full dimensions, ready for you to recreate. 👏
This one is all about the techniques—and oh, are you in for a treat. 🎃
🎃 Techniques That Take This Layout from Spooky to Spectacular!
🧵 Bold Pinstripe Background – Handmade, Baby!
Let’s start with that killer striped background on the right page—spoiler alert: it’s not patterned paper. It’s 1/4” strips of Basic Black cardstock, cut with care and evenly spaced for a sleek pinstripe effect.
I wanted something structured and bold, but I didn’t have paper that fit the vibe. So I did what any good Halloween-loving crafter would do: I made it myself. 💁🏻♀️
After spacing the strips vertically, I sliced diagonally across the bottom to match the angled energy of the patchwork on the left page, creating movement and balance across both sides of the layout.
Why it works: The crisp black stripes mimic the gothic elegance of Jack Skellington’s suit and add a subtle Halloween drama without overwhelming the design.
Pro Tip: When you don’t have paper, you make it! Try this with other colors or widths, or stamp your own pattern for an entirely custom vibe.
🧩 Patchwork Perfection – But Make It Spooky
The left side of the Disney Haunted Mansion-Inspired Scrapbook Layout brings the spook with a hand-cut patchwork of angled “fabric” pieces, but this isn’t your grandma’s quilt. I cut each patch by hand, then gave them zig-zag edges using my Cricut. This created a slightly jagged, Frankenstein-inspired vibe that felt perfect for the Haunted Mansion.
Why I chose this: The patchwork adds texture, energy, and a stitched-together storybook feel, like pages of a Halloween journal meeting stitched fabric panels. It nods to Sally from Nightmare Before Christmas without directly referencing her.
Pro Tip: No Cricut? No problem. You can achieve the same effect with pinking shears, a decorative Thin Cut, or even good old-fashioned fussy cutting. 🧠✂️
🖤 Black & White Photo Drama
Five black-and-white photos take center stage on this layout—and trust me, it was a deliberate design choice.
I placed them all in the center of the layout for a cinematic, moody feel. Think film stills from a haunted adventure. Each photo is double-matted to help them pop: a base layer of white for contrast, and then Pool Party on the left page or Basic Black on the right to anchor them in the layout.
Why this rocks: The stark black and white immediately creates mood and emotion. And by placing color photos at the far left and right edges—especially the one of my little man—I framed the story with moments that bring you back to reality. It’s spooky, it’s thoughtful, and it adds contrast that makes everything feel more magical.
🕸️ Spiderweb Anchors – Because Even Chaos Needs a Base!
The spiderwebs from the Fright Night Bundle were the unsung heroes of this layout. I cut them in Basic Black and used them as anchor points for all my clusters—layering florals, leaves, and titles around them.
Why it works: Visually, webs are delicate yet bold. They let other pieces shine while still pulling everything together. Structurally, they gave me a consistent place to build from, making the design feel unified from top to bottom.
Creative Tip: Webs, frames, stitched dies—any detailed shape can serve as a design anchor. Think of it like a foundation for your spooky scene.
🎨 White-Inked Embellishments – Ghostly Glow-Up!
Most of my embellishments are solid black die cuts, and they needed help standing out. So I grabbed my white ink pad and gently brushed the edges of each one.
Florals, leaves, even the tombstones got this treatment.
Why this matters: The white ink adds instant contrast, texture, and dimension to otherwise flat black pieces. It’s a simple trick, but it helps those embellishments “lift” off the layout and grab your eye, even against dark backgrounds.
Bonus Tip: Use sponge daubers for a softer halo or apply ink directly with a blending brush for more coverage. Either way, your embellishments will never blend into the background again.
🐭 Hidden Mickeys – Oh Yes, I Went There!
You didn’t think I’d forget the Disney magic, did you?
There are three Hidden Mickeys tucked into this Disney Haunted Mansion-Inspired Scrapbook Layout, and they’re not by the tombstone, so don’t even look there! 😏 Look closely at the black-and-white photo clusters. It’s my little nod to the mouse who started it all. 🐭✨
Why it’s special: Including Hidden Mickeys gives this layout an interactive twist. It’s fun for the viewer, keeps things playful, and makes the spread feel like a scavenger hunt. Spoiler: everyone loves finding them—even when they weren’t looking.
✂️ Cricut-Cut Title & Custom Embellishments
My “This Is Halloween” title and standout lily embellishment were both created using my Cricut—and they’re dimensional, eye-catching, and totally scene-stealing.
The lily didn’t show up well at first, so I adjusted my floral clusters, added white-ink detailing, and popped it up with foam tape for dramatic height.
Why it shines: Every layout needs a title that owns the room. The layered lettering makes it readable and bold, and the raised embellishments add that final 3D punch that makes you go, “Okay, now THAT’S cool.”
Typed Journaling Strips – A Boo-tiful Teaser Technique!
Let’s talk journaling—because memory keeping isn’t just about pretty paper, it’s about telling the story that matters. And while I love handwritten journaling (it’s personal, expressive, and oh-so-meaningful), my big bubbly handwriting can sometimes steal the whole spotlight. 😅
So here’s what I do: I save my handwritten stories for hidden flip flaps—and add a teaser on the layout with one of my favorite tricks… typed journaling on clear Avery labels, stuck onto cardstock strips! 🖤🩵
Why it’s a win:
Adds extra color and contrast to your layout
Keeps things clean and readable
Feels modern, layered, and super intentional
In this Disney Haunted Mansion-Inspired Scrapbook Layout, I layered my typed strips on Pool Party cardstock to tie in with the color palette and draw your eye to the narrative. It’s a small design move with big storytelling impact—and a total go-to in my scrappy toolbox!
Pro Tip: Use different widths of strips to create movement and rhythm across your layout. And don’t be afraid to tilt them slightly—we’re not robots, we’re memory makers. 📝✨
💥 When Bold Ideas Haunt the Page… Magic Happens! 🧙♀️
This layout was a wild ride of bold contrasts, handmade everything, and fearless design choices—and it WORKED. 🖤
Was I nervous? Heck yes. First time using BW photos. First time doing all black embellishments. First time mixing haunted elegance with playful Disney.
But when you lean into the weird, trust your gut, and say “let’s get spooky,” you end up with something hauntingly beautiful.
