How I Made It – Layout Instructions Straight From the Studio
This double-page 12x12 layout is designed for maximum visual impact—with dramatic layering, story-focused journaling, and a DIY film strip that steals the show! Grab your free sketch & let's get crafting!
1️⃣ Start with the Scene Setup – Building the Base
Start with two 12x12” sheets of Poppy Parade cardstock from the Turtle-y Sweet Two-Tone Cardstock pack as your layout foundation.
Left Page Design:
Take the diagonal striped paper from the Turtle-y Cute DSP. The softer colors balance the bold red base and play well with the film strip’s visual weight.
Mat this paper on Crushed Curry cardstock and ink the edges for extra depth.
Right Page Color Balance:
To unify both pages, bring Crushed Curry DSP or Cardstock over to the right side as a background element. It ties the two halves together and reinforces that perfect Disney color combo!
2️⃣ Add Your Star Moments – Double-Matted Photos
• Use 6-1/2” x 4-1/2” photo mats, double-matted in Basic Black and White Willow.
• Photo sizes are 4”x6”.
• These are your “feature shots”—big, bold, and placed across both pages to anchor your story.
We are not adhering to the page just yet! But we do want to lay them in position so we know where to place our film strip!
🎞️ Roll Film, Baby! How I Built This DIY Film Strip Masterpiece
If you’re a visual learner like me (🙋♀️), sometimes step-by-step photos make all the difference. That’s why I recreated the film strip and used a Crushed Curry backdrop—so it’s easier to see exactly how the layers go together. One strip is fully assembled, and the other is left undone to show the distinction between each step. 📸
So grab your cardstock and your glue runner—we’re going full director mode! 🎬
Here’s exactly how I built it from scratch:
🎬 Step 1: Cut Your Base Strip
Start by cutting two strips of Basic Black cardstock to 12” x 3”. These will form the solid background base for your film strip.
🖼️ Step 2: Add Your Photo Mats
Cut White Willow mats to 2-5/8” x 2-5/8”. These are for your 2” x 2” character photos, providing a crisp, clean frame and just enough breathing room to make them pop against the black background.
➡️ Pro Tip: Start placement with the center mat, then move to the ends. This helps you space things evenly and avoid that awkward “uhhh… why is this one floating?” look.
Glue them evenly across your black strips.

🕳️ Step 3: Create the Film Reel Holes
Now for the signature touch!
• Cut four strips for each movie strip: two in Basic Black, two in White Willow, each 12” x 1/2”
• Use your Cricut OR a 1/6” square punch like the one shown here to make your little reel holes.
⚙️ Lay the black strip with holes over the white strip and glue together. This layered look gives it that old-school film edge.
Attach one to the top and one to the bottom of your photo strip—instant film strip effect achieved!
📸 Step 4: Add Your Photos
Now place your 2” x 2” character photos onto the White Willow mats.
But we’re not done yet…
🧩 Step 5: The Cross-Page Trick (Pay Close Attention!)
Here’s where it gets juicy.
You’re going to angle the full strip across the layout so it runs from the left page to the right page.
This angle adds movement and movie vibes, but it also means a little creative maneuvering.
On the left page, the strip will overhang slightly on the left edge (no worries—we trim that later!). On the right side of the left page, the strip won’t reach all the way.
That’s your cue for Strip #2!
Take the second strip and attach just a small section of it to the end of the first strip, on the right edge of the left page. Trim it clean.
Now line up the remaining piece so it will sit perfectly on the left side of the right page… but don’t glue it down just yet!
Your double-matted 4x6 photo on the right side will cover part of the strip, so we’re going full magician mode here:
✂️ Trim out the section of the film strip that would sit under the photo in half.
Once your photo is in place, you’ll slide the rest of the strip under it to complete the illusion that the film strip runs continuously across both pages.
✨ Movie magic? CHECK.
🎬 Scrapbook sorcery? CHECK.
⭐ Award-worthy? Um, obviously.
4️⃣ Lights, Camera, Embellishments!
• Popcorn Die Cuts – I cut these from Crushed Curry to match the page, inked the edges, and layered them throughout the layout. Some are popped with foam tape; others are glued flat for variation.
• Film Reels – Cut from brushed silver foil, then double-matted with Basic Black circles to fill the inner holes. These small, shiny elements guide the eye and form the points of my visual triangle.
• Movie Tickets & Titles – Designed in Cricut Design Space, cut with my Cricut, and both titles are popped up with foam tape for extra dimension.
5️⃣ Journaling – The Director’s Cut
Journaling is where the real magic happens. ✨
It’s not just words—it’s the story behind the smile, the chaos behind the camera, and the moment you never want to forget.
For this layout, I wanted to capture the feeling of that wild, unscripted character hunt—not just what we saw, but how it felt.
That’s what journaling is all about: capturing the magic, not just the memory.
I used clear Avery labels for a sleek, unobtrusive look that lets the background shine. And because the film strip adds movement to the layout, I angled my journaling to match that same cinematic flow. (But hey, you do you—straight or angled, your journaling should fit your story and your style!)
Whether it’s a quick quote, a full play-by-play, or just a few words that bring it all back, write like you talk and keep it real. Because your future self—and everyone who reads it—will feel the magic all over again. 🖤🎬
