The bravest little lion on stage — and the star of this Wizard of Oz scrapbook layout! 🦁✨

🌪️ No Place Like Craft Room: My Wizard of Oz Scrapbook Layout Story

When my little man stepped onto the school stage as the Cowardly Lion, I swear my heart grew three sizes… and maybe my glitter stash did too. 🦁✨

This Wizard of Oz scrapbook layout captures every proud-mama roar and every sparkle of courage from his big debut.

This project is one of my OG layouts — a throwback to the days when I was still discovering what scene-building even meant. Before I had a website, before I knew a keyword from a cardstock weight, and long before I realized that a messy Design Space® sketch could turn into something straight out of the Emerald City.

So grab your glue gun, click your heels three times, and follow me down the yellow brick road to creativity! 🌈

✂️ Here’s What You Need to Create Your 12x12 Wizard of Oz Scrapbook Layout

Originally crafted with Close To My Heart’s “The Good Life” collection and Digital Art Kits. (These can easily be re-created with Stampin’ Up!® colors and tools for today’s crafters.)

The Good Life Paper Pack -Scrapbooking materials with gratitude and birthday messages, rustic patterns, buttons, and a country theme on a textured background.
Kansas charm in paper form — The Good Life collection brings farmhouse feels to every layer. 🌾

Base Paper: 12 × 12 checkered pattern paper from The Good Life Paper Pack – sets that cozy Kansas-farmhouse foundation.

Cardstock Layers: White Daisy (for base panels & photo mats), Harbor (for storm rays), and Mist (from the Mix-In Paper Pack) for contrast and texture.

Inks: Close To My Heart Intense Black for edge-inking and deep storm shadows.

Digital Art Kits: The Good Life: Farm-themed collage with barn, fences, red wheelbarrow, windmill, and harvest signs. Text includes "garden FRESH" and "LIVING our best LIFE."
Cut files that do all the heavy lifting — this kit gave me the fence, windmill, and grass that blew right off the page! 💨

Digital Art Kits: The Good Life + Cape Cod – combined to cut SVG elements for the rays, windmill, fence, house, and grass.

Tools: Cricut® + Design Space® for SVG cuts, Sponge Daubers for inky clouds, and Avery Clear Labels for typed journaling.

Adhesives & Accents: Foam tape for dimension and a dash of courage for good measure. 😉

💡 Pro Tip: If you’re using Stampin’ Up!® products, try swapping in Misty Moonlight and Basic Gray for a modern take on that Harbor-and-Mist palette.

Follow the Yellow Brick Road: Building My 12×12 Wizard of Oz Scrapbook Layout

Collage of stormy farm scene: house, tornado, animals, windmill on grid background with clouds and crops. Tornado and animals show motion.
From chaos to Kansas! My Design Space mock-up looked like a tornado hit… but just wait for the final reveal. 😂

This layout is a true flashback moment! It was created before I ever imagined having a blog or writing tutorials. It’s where my scene-building obsession began (and where I learned that even a Design Space mess can lead to magic).

Step 1 – Setting the Stage with Kansas Charm

I started with that checkered pattern paper base from The Good Life to anchor both pages, then layered a sheet of White Daisy on top for brightness. Think of it as Kansas before the storm — simple, peaceful, and ready for drama.

Cape Cod Digital Art Kit - Beach-themed scrapbook elements with palm trees, seashells, a seagull, and a sailboat. Notable texts: "beach day" and "missing you."
Here’s where the magic rays came from! The Cape Cod Digital Art Kit turned my stormy sky into a cinematic masterpiece. 🌪️☀️

Step 2 – Creating the Stormy Sky Rays

The rays were cut using the Cape Cod Digital Art Kit. I alternated between Harbor cardstock and that soft Mist pattern paper from the Mix-In Pack.

After cutting with Cricut, I inked every edge with Intense Black Ink, leaving tiny White Daisy gaps between each ray so the light peeked through like flashes of lightning. The Harbor-and-Mist combo brought that tornado-ready sky to life — moody, dynamic, and totally cinematic. 🌪️

💡 Pro Tip: When working with dark inks like Intense Black, dab your edges instead of dragging — you’ll get soft shadows and avoid harsh lines.

Step 3 – Photo Placement and Matting Magic

This layout holds six photos from my son’s performance. Each photo is double-matted in White Daisy and either Mist cardstock or the same checkered pattern as the base. That mix of light and dark frames keeps the eye moving like a camera panning from scene to scene. 🎭

Step 4 – Building the Emerald City Adventure (and the WIZZARD Moment!)

Collage with a group of people in costume on stage, dark blue and gray background, text "OFF TO SEE THE WIZZARD," house, and tornado images.
Off to See the WIZZARD’ — spelled exactly how my little lion said it! Imperfect title, perfect memory. 💛👠

The house and fence were cut from striped Good Life paper to mimic wind-whipped movement.

The windmill (from The Good Life Digital Art Kit) looks like it’s spinning right off the page, and the flying farm animals, cornstalks, rainbow, ruby slippers, and Emerald City were all cut in Design Space®.

The grass (also from The Good Life Digital Art Kit) was cut in Mist cardstock and inked for depth.

Then came my favorite part: the storm clouds and the title. I inked each cloud with Intense Black Ink until they looked dark, puffy, and ready to burst. Right on them sits the title — “Off to See the WIZZARD.”

Before you send a spell-check suggestion, that extra “Z” was completely intentional! That’s how my little lion used to say it — “Wizz-zard!” 🦁💛 It was too adorable not to capture. While my early Design Space skills were… let’s say “developing,” this happy misspelling became one of my favorite details — proof that imperfection is the magic.

Step 5 – Finishing Touches & Journaling

I typed my journaling on Avery Clear Labels and layered them right over the patterned sky paper, so the words float on the scene. It keeps the focus on the story while letting that stormy backdrop shine through.

Why This Layout is Over the Rainbow 🌈

Scrapbook page with Wizard of Oz theme, featuring character images, tornado, rainbow. Blue cloud background, text reads "Off to see the wizzard."
Who knew a Design Space hot mess could turn into this? Over the rainbow proud of this double-page beauty. 🌈✨

You know that moment when you look at your Design Space® mock-up and think, “Oh dear… this is going to be a hot mess”? 😂 That was me! The digital preview looked like Dorothy’s tornado had already hit my computer. But once I started cutting, inking, and layering, it transformed faster than Glinda’s bubble.

What makes me laugh now is seeing that chaotic screenshot next to the finished page. Those mismatched boxes and scattered SVGs somehow became a scene straight out of the movie — animals flying, the windmill breaking loose, the little tilted farmhouse in the corner made from striped paper that mimicked the spinning wind. It’s like my Cricut® was in on the joke.

When I first built this layout, I had no idea what I was doing; I just knew I wanted to capture that whirlwind feeling from the movie. Looking back now, this is the layout that made me fall in love with scene-building. It turned out better than I ever dreamed, and I’m still so proud of that brand-new scrapbooker who pulled it off. 💛

🏠 From Kansas to Craft Room: Where Courage Meets Creativity

Two scrapbook pages with "Off to see the Wizzard" text. Features tornado, rainbow, Wizard of Oz themes with photos and decorative elements.
From Kansas to craft room — proof that every creative journey starts with a little courage and a whole lot of cardstock. 🪄💖

This Wizard of Oz scrapbook layout will always hold a special place in my heart. It reminds me that great ideas rarely start perfect — sometimes they begin with a messy Design Space file, a half-inked dauber, and a whole lot of faith in the process.

I remember re-watching the movie that day, pepperoncini popcorn in hand, taking mental notes on stormy skies and flying fences. Who knew that cinematic inspiration would lead to a scrapbook page full of wind, whimsy, and one very brave little lion? 🦁

It’s funny now… the newbie version of me had no idea she was laying the foundation for everything that came next: storytelling, scene-building, layering, and confidence to let creativity lead the way.

So whether your own “before” looks like a tornado zone or a blank sheet of cardstock, trust the magic. Every masterpiece starts with a mess, and every scrapbooker finds their Emerald City eventually.
