Harry Potter Fans, Check Out These Magical DIY Pull Top Christmas Gift Card Holders!!
After seeing the Disney-Inspired Pull Top Christmas Gift Card Holders I created, a friend reached out to ask if I would make something similar for her daughter, who is a huge Harry Potter fan. How could I resist such a fun project request? These Pull Top Christmas Gift Card Holders are not only a delightful way to give a gift card but also a wonderful opportunity to add a personal, magical touch to holiday gift-giving.

Designing in Design Space®️
Once again, I turned to Design Space®️ to help create the visual layout. Since I had previously saved the Disney-Inspired Christmas Card Holders in my library, designing these new Harry Potter-themed holders became much faster. This is one of the many benefits I find in using Design Space—it saves my designs, and I can always come back to them, making it easy to tweak and customize for future projects.
Using Design Space®️ doesn’t mean that you need a Cricut®️ to complete your projects. I often use it for visual planning and measuring, and then use stamps and dies for the actual creation.
However, this time, I didn’t have stamps or dies that worked for Harry Potter-themed embellishments. That’s when I turned to Etsy®, where I found some fantastic SVG/PNG/clip art files to print and cut. They worked perfectly for the magical theme!
The book embellishment featured on the stocking is an SVG from the CTMH Digital Art Collection called Cozy Up. Unfortunately, this collection is no longer available for purchase. However, you can easily find similar book designs in Cricut Design Space or other digital SVG marketplaces to add a similar touch to your projects.
Creating Your Striped Paper
For this project, I created my striped paper:
1. Cut a piece of Cherry Cobbler (or CTMH Scarlet) Cardstock to measure 6” x 11 1/2”.
2. Cut six strips of Pumpkin Pie Cardstock (or CTMH Sundance) measuring 6” x 1/2”.
3. Adhere the 1/2” strips evenly across the Cherry Cobbler cardstock to create the striped paper.
This striped paper will be used for one of the card fronts, cuffs, and toe & heel details of the stocking.
Prep To Make Both Cards:
• Cut out all stocking front and back pieces:
• 1 piece in the striped Cherry Cobbler paper we created
• 3 pieces in Basic Black Cardstock
• Cut out all cuff pieces:
• 1 in the striped paper we created
• 1 in Basic Black Cardstock
• 2 in Cherry Cobbler (or CTMH Scarlett)
• 2 in White Willow (or CTMH White Daisy)
• Cut two strips of White Willow:
• 1 measuring 2 1/4” x 5 1/3”
• 2 smaller strips measuring 2 1/4” x 1”.
• Using Stampin’ Up! Deckled Circle Dies:
• Cut two pieces with the 2 3/4” x 2 3/4” die in White Willow and Cherry Cobbler.
• Ink the edges of the White Willow Deckled Circle using a sponge dauber and CTMH Intense Black Ink.
• Using the 2 1/2” x 2 1/2” Deckled Circle Die:
• Cut pieces in Basic Black, Cherry Cobbler (2), and the striped paper we created.
• Using Stampin’ Up! Poinsettia Petals Dies:
• Cut 12 leaves in Garden Green Cardstock.
• Ink the edges of each Garden Green leaf with a Garden Green Stampin’ Pad using a sponge dauber, then use Dark Mossy Meadow Stampin’ Blends to accentuate the leaf veins.
• Cut two poinsettias in Cherry Cobbler and two in Basic Black.
• Ink the edges of each Cherry Cobbler petal with the Cherry Cobbler Stampin’ Ink Pad and adhere the petals together with a small amount of Bearly Glue in the centers. Set aside to dry.
• Cherry Cobbler & Gold ribbon:
• Cut 2 pieces of Cherry Cobbler & Gold ribbon to 3” each.
• Print and cut your SVG title and embellishments.
General Construction of the Stocking & Pull Tab
Now that we have done most of our prep work, let’s construct the striped stocking! This is the general construction of the card and pull tab before adding any embellishments. Regardless of the design or embellishments you choose to add, these steps will guide you in creating the basic pull-top card holder. Once you have this structure in place, you can create the second stocking or even get creative with different papers, colors, and decorations to make your own unique design.
1. Assembling the Striped Stocking:
• Start by gluing the striped front of the first stocking to the Basic Black back. To do this, apply a thin line of glue as close to the two sides and bottom edges of the stocking as possible. Remember not to glue along the top edges of the stocking, as this will serve as your pocket for the gift card. Set aside to dry.
2. Preparing the Cuff:
• Adhere the Basic Black cuff piece to the middle White Willow cuff piece.
• Position your front cuff topper on the stocking where you want it to sit. Flip it over so that the front of your stocking and topper are face down. On the back, adhere foam tape to the exposed areas of the topper.
3. Creating the Pull Tab:
• Glue the two small 2 1/4” x 1” pieces of White Willow cardstock on top of each other.
• Adhere these strips to the top of the 2 1/4” x 5 1/2” strip of White Willow cardstock. This will be the BACK piece of the strip that slides in and out of your stocking.
• On the front of the 2 1/4” x 5 1/2” strip, use removable adhesive to attach your gift card to the bottom of the strip. The front of the strip will be the side that doesn’t have the two smaller strips attached.
• Position this strip, with the gift card facing forward, into the pocket of the stocking.
• Remove the backing off of the foam tape from the middle of the cuff topper and adhere it to the front of the strip that is positioned and sticking out of your stocking. Only remove the foam tape backing that is needed to adhere to the white strip. We will remove the rest when we add the back cuff.
Adding Embellishments to the Back of the Card
We will begin by working on the back of the Harry Potter Gift Card Holder. Since none of the elements on the back are popped up with foam tape, keeping everything flat makes it easier to start here.
Step 1: Prepare and Attach the Cuff
Start with the Cherry Cobbler cuff. On the inside of the back cuff, position the Cherry Cobbler & Gold Ribbon in the left-hand corner to create a stocking loop. Secure it in place with adhesive.
Step 2: Adding Hand-Drawn Details
Flip the cuff over to the front. Using a white gel pen, add hand-drawn stitching along the edge of the cuff to give it a stitched appearance. Let the ink dry completely before moving on to the next step.
Step 3: Adding Leaves and Berry Cluster
To continue embellishing, adhere two Garden Green leaves to the top left-hand corner of the cuff. Make sure the ribbon loop you just created is centered between the leaves, with the tips of the leaves slightly extending beyond the cuff’s edge. The leaves should overlap slightly to create a central point, where you will add the Cherry Cobbler Adhesive-Backed Berries Cluster to tie everything together.
Step 4: Stamping “To” and “From”
Next, stamp the words “To” and “From” in CTMH White Daisy ink or Stampin' Up! White Craft Refill using the Stampin’ Up! Greetings of the Seasons Stamp Set. Allow the stamped area to dry before moving on.
Step 5: Attaching the Front and Back Cuff
Once all of the back cuff elements are dry, remove the remaining foam tape backing from the front cuff and attach the front and back cuff pieces together.
Step 6: Adding Toe and Heel Details
Now, let’s move on to embellishing the back stocking. Take your 2 1/2” x 2 1/2” Cherry Cobbler Deckled circle and cut it in half. Use one half for the toe of the stocking, adhering it in place.
Use the other half for the heel; if the circle is too large, position it accordingly and trim off any excess. Add hand-drawn stitching to the toe and heel using the white gel pen to give it a cohesive look.
Step 7: Adding the Dobby Embellishment
Attach your Dobby embellishment to the center of the 2 3/4” x 2 3/4” Cherry Cobbler Deckled Circle Die. Overlap the book embellishment just enough that the corner of the book meets the sock in Dobby's hands.
Step 8: Adding Stars
Finally, add multiple-sized stars cut from Stampin’ Up! Pumpkin Pie (or CTMH Sundance) cardstock to complete the back embellishments.
This completes the back of the Harry Potter-themed Pull Top Christmas Gift Card Holder, creating a magical and cohesive design that is ready for display!
Adding Embellishments to the Front of the Harry Potter Gift Card Holder
Now that the back is complete, it’s time to embellish the front of your Harry Potter Pull Top Gift Card Holder. These detailed steps will ensure that the front matches the magical theme while adding layers and dimensions that make it truly special.
Step 1: Add Stitching Details to the Cuff
Begin by taking the Basic Black cuff and using a white gel pen to draw hand-stitched lines around the edges. This stitching adds a handcrafted, polished touch, enhancing the cozy, homemade feel of the card.
Step 2: Attach the Harry Potter Title
Place the Harry Potter title onto the left-hand side of the cuff. This serves as one of the main focal points on the cuff and adds that instantly recognizable Harry Potter magic to the card.
Step 3: Add the Poinsettia and Leaf Cluster
Position the Stampin’ Up! Cherry Cobbler poinsettia (or CTMH Scarlett) along with the Garden Green leaf cluster on the right side of the cuff, with the leaves extending into the upper right corner. Make sure that these leaves line up with those on the back cuff, creating a continuous look that flows seamlessly between the front and back. Once aligned, adhere the leaves together.
Step 4: Add Cherry Cobbler & Clear Adhesive-Backed Berries
To finish off the poinsettia cluster, add the Cherry Cobbler & Clear Adhesive-Backed Berries to the center of the flower. This touch adds texture and a festive sparkle that really draws the eye.
Step 5: Attach the Toe and Heel
Take the Basic Black 2 1/2” x 2 1/2” Deckled Circle Die and cut it in half. Use one half for the toe and the other for the heel. If the heel portion is too large, adjust and trim off any excess. Once adhered, add hand-drawn stitching to both the toe and heel using the white gel pen—giving it the same cohesive, handcrafted detail seen throughout the card.
Step 6: Add the Center Embellishment Cluster
Next, attach foam tape to the back of the center front embellishment. After removing the backing, adhere it to the 2 3/4” x 2 3/4” WhiteWillow Deckled Circle Die with black inked edges. The foam tape will give the embellishment a raised appearance, adding dimension to the front.
Step 7: Attach the Embellishment Cluster to the Stocking
Before adhering the embellishment cluster to the stocking, position Garden Green leaves on the bottom left corner where the cluster will go. The leaves should stay within the stocking’s boundaries, positioned so that the broom embellishment slightly overhangs the leaves. Once the leaves are positioned, adhere to the embellishment cluster on top.
Step 8: Add the Finishing Touches
For the final touch, add clear dots from the Cherry Cobbler & Clear Adhesive-Backed Berries. These clear dots will give the card a festive and polished sparkle, completing the magical design.
Completion
Now that we’ve completed the Striped Harry Potter Pull Top Christmas Gift Card Holder, it’s time to move on to the second card.
The assembly for the second card is exactly the same as what we’ve just covered, with one key difference—the colors. The methods, embellishments, placement of embellishments, and even the process of assembling the card and pull tab are all identical.
By simply changing the color scheme, you can achieve a different look and feel while keeping the consistency of design and process. This is a great example of how versatile these card designs can be when adapted to different color palettes!
