🔥 Rise Again! A Fiery Handmade Masculine Phoenix Encouragement Card Tutorial Packed With Grit, Grunge & Heart
🔥 From the Ashes… This Card Was Born!
Some cards start with pretty paper. This one started with a message.
While creating cards for the Fresh Start Program, I wanted a design that represented what a fresh start really means: strength, change, and the courage to begin again.
Enter the Phoenix. 🔥
Rising from the ashes, the Phoenix has long symbolized rebirth, renewal, and resilience. Honestly, could there be a more perfect image for a Fresh Start card?
So naturally, I gave it the full This Chick Loves Paper treatment: embossed metal, exposed brick, torn edges, distressed ink, industrial details, dimensional Cricut cuts, and enough grunge to make a clean-and-simple card nervous. 😂
I originally envisioned this as a masculine encouragement card, but that Phoenix carries a message for anyone who needs it:
Your story isn’t over. Rise again.
Today we’re building this 5” × 7” card layer by layer, and stick around until the end because I’m going to show you how changing just the SVG turned this same basic card design into something completely different. 💀

🔥 How to Make This Masculine Phoenix Encouragement Card
Now that our supplies are gathered, it’s time to bring this bird to life! We’re building our 5” x 7” Phoenix encouragement card from the bottom up, starting with that Basic Black card base and layering on all that glorious metal, brick, grit, and grunge.
🔩 STEP 1: START WITH SOME HEAVY METAL!
Every good Phoenix encouragement card needs a strong foundation, and we’re kicking this one off with Basic Black and a little heavy metal… paper edition, of course! 🤘😂
Start with a piece of Stampin’ Up! Basic Black 8-1/2” x 11” Cardstock and cut it to 10” x 7”. Score at 5”, fold, and give that fold a good burnish with your Bone Folder. Boom! You’ve got a 5” x 7” card base ready for some serious attitude.
Next, cut a piece of Stampin’ Up! Lunar Luster 12” x 12” Specialty Paper (can substitute Stampin’ Up! Silver 12x12 Foul Sheets) just slightly smaller than your card front. You only need enough of that Basic Black peeking around the outside to create a thin border.
Run the Lunar Luster panel through your Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine using the Stampin’ Up! Metal Plate 3D Embossing Folder. That shiny specialty paper combined with the raised metal texture is pretty fabulous straight out of the folder…
But we’re not doing shiny and well-behaved today. 😂
Grab your Early Espresso Classic Stampin’ Pad and lightly drag the edges of the Lunar Luster panel directly across the ink pad. This darkens those edges and immediately starts knocking back some of that brand-new-metal shine.
Then grab a Sponge Dauber, pick up a little more Early Espresso Ink, and randomly rub or dab it across portions of the raised Metal Plate texture.
Once you’re happy with all that glorious grit and grunge, adhere the embossed Lunar Luster panel directly to your Basic Black card base. And just like that, our Phoenix has a landing pad! 🔥
PRO TIP: RANDOM IS THE RULE!
Don’t try to ink every raised section, and definitely don’t try to make it even.
A little here, a smudge there, a darker spot somewhere else… that’s what gives this layer its worn, beat-up industrial look. We’re going for been-through-the-fire, not fresh off the showroom floor. 🔥😂
🧱 STEP 2: TEAR IT UP, BABY!
Now let’s add some brick, grit, and grunge!
Cut the light side of Stampin’ Up! Two-Tone Pecan Pie 12” x 12” Cardstock to the same size as the Lunar Luster panel from Step 1. Then forget the Paper Trimmer. We’re tearing this baby up! 😂
Hand-tear all four edges, letting the panel naturally shrink and reveal irregular peeks of that gorgeous metallic layer underneath.
Run the torn panel through your Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine using the Stampin’ Up! Exposed Brick 3D Embossing Folder.
Grab your Early Espresso Classic Stampin’ Pad and Sponge Dauber and distress the torn edges. Then randomly dab and drag a little ink across portions of the raised brick texture for that worn, weathered look.
Once you’re happy with the distressing, adhere the brick panel directly over the Lunar Luster layer.
Battered metal + torn brick? Now we’re talking! 🔥
💡 PRO TIP: PERFECTLY IMPERFECT WINS!
Don’t evenly ink the brick! Those random darker spots, smudges, and variations are what give this background its grungy, been-through-the-fire personality. 🔥
🔥 STEP 3: IT’S TIME TO RISE!
Now that our gritty background is ready, it’s time to bring in the star of the show… the Phoenix! 🔥
I uploaded my Phoenix SVG into Cricut Design Space, then created a 5” × 7” card outline to represent my finished card front. With the actual Phoenix SVG positioned over that outline, I could resize and arrange the design until everything looked perfectly proportioned.
Once I was happy with the size, I cut two copies of the Phoenix and adhered them together. This gives all those detailed pieces a little extra strength while adding some subtle dimension.
Next, I added Foam Tape to the back of the Phoenix, supporting the larger areas as well as the detailed wings and lower sections. Then I centered the Phoenix over my distressed brick background and adhered it to the front of the card.
And just like that, our Phoenix has officially landed! 🔥
🖤 STEP 4: STACK IT LIKE IT’S HOT!
Our Phoenix may have landed, but she still needs something to say! 🔥
For FRESH START, I created the design in Cricut Design Space as a Print Then Cut, printed and cut it multiple times, then stacked and adhered the identical pieces together. This gave the bold lettering extra strength and dimension without losing any of that printed detail.
For RISE AGAIN, I cut the words multiple times from Stampin’ Up! Basic Black Cardstock and stacked those layers together for a thicker, almost chipboard-like finish.
Once everything was stacked, I positioned FRESH START across the front of the Phoenix, making that oversized sentiment part of the focal design. Then I added the RISE AGAIN banner directly underneath, overlapping the lower portion of the Phoenix.
💡 PRO TIP: DON’T BE AFRAID TO OVERLAP!
Your focal pieces don’t always need their own little patch of real estate. Layering your sentiment directly over a large SVG connects the elements visually and turns several separate pieces into one strong focal point.
💥 STEP 5: SPLAT HAPPENS… THEN ADD A LITTLE HARDWARE!
Our Phoenix is in place, but that background still needs a little grungy goodness!
Using the Close To My Heart My Acrylix™ Ink Blot Stamp Set (D1660) and Early Espresso Ink, I added splatters to three open areas around the Phoenix, creating a loose visual triangle around the focal point.
Then I added Stampin’ Up! Industrial Trinkets around the outer edges of the torn Pecan Pie panel. Those little metallic details tie right back to the Lunar Luster background and chain imagery without competing with our fiery star of the show.
A little splat. A little metal. A whole lotta attitude. BOOM! 💥
💡 PRO TIP: THREE’S A CHARM!
When adding small accents like splatters, embellishments, or stamped details, try placing them in three areas around your focal point.
That visual triangle helps move the eye around the design and makes all those little details feel intentional instead of randomly plopped onto the card.
🖤 STEP 6: DON’T LEAVE THE INSIDE HANGING!
That card front may be bringing the fire, but we’re not sending anybody a naked inside! 😂
For the inside, I added another panel using the light side of Stampin’ Up! Two-Tone Pecan Pie 12” × 12” Cardstock.
Before doing any stamping, I grabbed a pair of scissors and roughed up the edges of the cardstock.
Then I added Early Espresso Ink around those distressed edges to carry that same worn, gritty look from the front of the card all the way inside.
For the message, I chose the perfect sentiment from the Close To My Heart Never Give Up Stamp Set (C1659):

I positioned the sentiment using my MISTI and stamped it with Early Espresso Ink. Then I brought back the Close To My Heart Ink Blot Stamp Set (D1660) and added splatters around the sentiment.
And here’s the important part: I wasn’t going for perfect stamping!
Some areas are lighter. Some are darker. Some of those splatters barely kiss the cardstock while others make a much stronger impression. That’s exactly what I wanted. The uneven stamping adds to that distressed, grungy look and keeps the inside from suddenly looking squeaky-clean compared to the front.
🔥 AND JUST LIKE THAT… OUR PHOENIX HAS RISEN!
And there she is! Now this masculine Phoenix encouragement card is finished inside AND out! 🔥
Between that battered Lunar Luster metal, torn brick background, broken chains, distressed edges, and oversized Phoenix, this 5” × 7” masculine encouragement card has all the grit I was hoping for. But what I really love about this design isn’t just how this card turned out…
It’s how easily you can make it your own.
Keep the basic formula and start switching things up! Change the SVG. Swap the cardstock or patterned paper. Play with the colors, textures, or sentiment. Suddenly the same basic design foundation can have an entirely different personality.

That’s exactly what happened with the cards I created for Fresh Start. My fiery RISE AGAIN Phoenix, the edgy STAY TRUE, STAY SOBER skull design, my NO FEAR skater cards & even my Jurassic Park Birthday Card look completely different, but they’re all built from that same gritty, layered design idea.
Same design formula. FOUR completely different attitudes. BOOM BABY! 💥
💡 PRO TIP: SAVE THE FORMULA, NOT JUST THE CARD!
When you find a card design that works, don’t think you have to recreate it exactly. Save the bones of the design and change what’s sitting on top of them.
One great card sketch can become a birthday card, graduation card, encouragement card, sports card, recovery card… whatever your crafty little heart dreams up!

When I started this card, I knew I wanted something bold, masculine, and a little rough around the edges. What I ended up with was something that feels like so much more than a Phoenix encouragement card.
Because that’s really what the Phoenix represents, isn’t it?
The fire doesn’t get the final word.
There will be hard chapters. There will be mistakes, setbacks, and moments when starting over feels impossible. But a fresh start doesn’t require pretending those things never happened. Sometimes it simply means deciding that they aren’t where your story ends.
That’s why creating these cards for the Fresh Start Program has meant so much to me. I may never know who holds this particular card in their hands or what their story looks like. But I hope when they see that Phoenix rising through the flames, they understand exactly what I wanted it to say:
You are stronger than what you’ve been through.
Your story isn’t over.
And you can always RISE AGAIN. 🔥
Now that is what I call putting a little heart behind the handmade.
