Looking for a creative way to gift a card this holiday season? This pull-top stocking gift card holder combines functionality with festive flair! Perfect for beginners and seasoned crafters alike, it’s a design you can customize for any holiday theme, favorite character, or color scheme. With its interactive pull-tab mechanism and endless design possibilities, this project is guaranteed to make your gift extra special.
Materials You’ll Need for Your Stocking Gift Card Holder
Before you dive into crafting, gather your materials! With just a few supplies and a little creativity, you’ll bring this project to life in no time.
• Cardstock:
• 2 pieces for the stocking base (front and back)
• 2 pieces for the stocking cuffs (front and back)
• 1 piece for the pull tab mechanism
(Mix and match colors for full creative control!)
• Foam Tape
• Adhesive: Liquid glue & double-sided tape
• White Gel Pen (Optional): For hand-drawn stitching details
• Ribbon: For the stocking loop
Step 1: Cut Your Pieces for the Pull-Top Gift Card Holder
Every great project starts with precise preparation. Cutting your pieces to size ensures your stocking comes together seamlessly.
1. Stocking Base:
• Cut two stocking-shaped pieces of cardstock for the front and back.
• Choose the same or different colors for a unique look.
2. Cuff Pieces:
• Cut two cuff-shaped pieces for the top of the stocking (front and back).
• Match or contrast these with your stocking colors.
3. Pull Tab Strip:
• Cut a strip measuring 2-1/2” x 9”.
• Cut two additional 2-1/2” x 1” pieces for the pull mechanism topper.
Add Stitching Before Assembly
It’s all in the details! If you’re planning to add hand-drawn stitching, now’s the perfect time to do it while the pieces are flat. It’ll add charm without the hassle of working on a 3D surface.
Prepare the Pull Tab Mechanism
The interactive magic of your gift card holder starts here! The pull-tab mechanism is what makes this design extra special—and functional.
1. Create the Gift Card Pocket:
• Fold up the bottom 2” of the 2-1/2” x 9” strip.
• Apply a very thin line of glue along the sides of the fold to form a pocket for the gift card.
2. Trim to Fit:
• If necessary, trim the entire strip (including the pocket) so the total length is 5-1/2”.
3. Add the Topper:
• Glue the two 2-1/2” x 1” pieces together.
• Adhere these pieces to the top of the backside of the pull-tab strip (the back is the side without the pocket).
Construct the Cuff for the Stocking Gift Card Holder
The cuff isn’t just decorative—it’s where all the functional pieces come together. Follow these steps to ensure your stocking has both style and structure.
1. Position the Cuff:
• Lay the cuff piece and stocking face down.
• Position the stocking on top of the cuff where you want it to sit when closed.
2. Add Foam Tape for Dimension:
• Add a horizontal strip of foam tape to the cuff, just above the top of the stocking, to stop the stocking from sliding too far into the cuff.
• Continue adding horizontal foam strips to the cuff until you reach the top, securing your ribbon loop under the last foam strip. (I also add a little dot of glue on the top & bottom of ribbon before applying foam strip)
3. Secure the Pull Tab:
• Position the pull-tab mechanism (pocket side down) so the top of the strip adheres to the foam. The rest of the strip will hang off to slide in and out of the stocking.
4. Attach the Back Cuff:
• Adhere the back cuff piece to cover any exposed foam tape for a clean finish.
💡 Pro Tip: Double-check the alignment of the front and back cuff pieces before adhering. Foam tape is sticky, and adjustments can be tricky once attached!
Assemble the Stocking Gift Card Holder
Now it’s time to bring all the pieces together! With a little glue and patience, your stocking will transform into a ready-to-gift masterpiece.
1. Glue the Stocking Together:
• Adhere the front and back stocking pieces together.
To do so, apply a very thin layer of glue around the stocking, leaving the top open for the pull-tab mechanism.
2. Keep It Flat While Drying:
• Stack ink pads (I use CTMH) or other heavy objects over the stocking to ensure it dries flat and evenly.
Step 3: Test the Pull Tab
• Insert a gift card into the pocket and test the pull mechanism. It should move smoothly and securely, ensuring the card stays in place as it slides in and out.
The Magic of Customization
With the basic construction complete, the possibilities are endless! Whether you add festive embellishments, character-inspired designs, or hand-drawn details, this pull-top gift card holder is the perfect blank canvas for your creativity.
