Ever Taken Inspiration from Tube Socks?
When a “Bah Bah” (grandma) requested a Sonic-themed stocking gift card holder for her grandson, I was thrilled to take on the challenge. Special requests are my favorite because they allow me to create something meaningful and unique. But when inspiration hit from the most unlikely place—my son’s tube socks—I knew this stocking would have a playful twist.
Let’s walk through how this Sonic-inspired stocking pull-top gift card holder came to life, step by step. Ready? Let’s go! 🏃♂️💨

Step 1: Designing the Front and Back with SVG Files 🎮🎄
The first step was finding the perfect SVG files. I wanted at least two—one for the front and one for the back. As luck would have it, I saw two designs with similar colors and a festive Christmas vibe. It was a match made in crafting heaven!
Using a SonicSVG from Pixwave for the Front of the stocking & a Sonic SVG Designed by BSHOP1Art for the back, in Cricut Design Space®️, I adjusted the sizing, layered the elements, and experimented with different placements until I had a balanced and cohesive design. Seeing it come together digitally made the creative process so much smoother.
Step 2: Building the Stocking Base and Adding Stripes 🧦✨
Here’s where my son’s tube socks came into play! After washing a load of laundry, I noticed the cool striped detail on his socks and thought, “Why not use that as inspiration?” I cut strips of Pool Party cardstock and adhered them horizontally to the stocking base, giving it that iconic striped look.
For the stocking’s main body, I used CTMH Bluebird cardstock and added a cuff in Stampin’ Up! Real Red cardstock. To keep things cohesive, I also planned to use Real Red for the toe and heel.
Step 3: Creating the Focal Point with Deckled Circle Dies 🎯✨
Next, I turned to my trusty Stampin’ Up! Deckled Circle Dies will be used to create the centerpiece for the stocking. Drawing inspiration from my Tokyo Ghoul project, I decided to flip my usual color scheme. Instead of a White Willow center, I used Pool Party for the inner layer and White Willow for the outer matting. This small change made the design pop beautifully!
Using a sponge dauber and Pool Party Classic Stampin’ Pad, I inked the edges of the circles to add depth and dimension. To complete the look, I layered the Sonic SVG on top.
Step 4: Adding the Toe, Heel, and Holly Leaves 🎨🌿
To create a visual triangle of color, I cut the toe and heel from Real Red cardstock and added faux stitching using my white gel pen. This little detail added a whimsical touch to the design. I also tucked a few Garden Green holly leaves (leftover from a previous project) under the Deckled Circle focal point for an extra pop of color.
Step 5: Bringing in Holiday Magic to the Sonic-Inspired Gift Card Holder with Snowflakes and Presents❄️🎁
To give the stocking a festive flair, I cut snowflakes from Pool Party cardstock and scattered them across the front and back of the stocking. The light blue color broke up the darker tones and added a playful winter vibe.
For the topper, I used elements from the CTMH Home For Christmas Digital Art Kit, including candy canes and wrapped presents. These cheerful additions tied the theme together and made the stocking feel complete.
To finish, I added adhesive dots to the centers of the snowflakes for a hint of sparkle and shine.
